The 3 myths about lash extensions

Hello Beauties, and welcome back to Beautifeye’s monthly blog!

As you may know, there’s a handful of common misconceptions and lash myths that may keep clients from taking their first step into the lash world. Trust me, lash extensions myths are just like any other obstacle in business: A learning experience.

In this post, I’ll be exposing the truth surrounding 3 of the most common lash extension myths that may be holding client’s back from getting lash extensions of their own.

MYTH #1 – EYELASH EXTENSIONS DAMAGE YOUR EYELASHES.

False: If applied and removed correctly, lash extensions can’t damage your natural lashes.

Lash Extension concept:

Lash Extensions are an enhancement used to create the appearance of a full and longer look. They come in a variety of materials like synthetic, mink, faux mink, or silk fibers, and can range in colors and lengths from short to dramatically long. They are placed on top of the natural lash using an adhesive that bonds to it’s base. The Extensions should be applied directly above or around each lash one at a time, this will protect your natural lashes as they grow away from the base.

Pulling out these enhancements on your own could result in damaged hair follicles. This is because without dissolving the glue you are putting strain directly onto your Lashes’ roots. Once those roots are damaged natural lashes will take longer to grow. In some cases, they may stop growing all together! To avoid possible lash damage, it’s best to visit a lash professional to have them removed.

The most important point you should remember is this: if extensions are applied properly and removed properly as well lash extensions can’t ruin your natural lashes.

MYTH #2 – THE EYELASH EXTENSION PROCEDURE IS PAINFUL AND UNCOMFORTABLE

FALSE: lash extensions should never hurt when applied properly by a licensed professional.

The process of applying lash extensions should be a fun experience for both you and your client. One of the most common complaints that we get surrounding our lash applications is how long appointments tend to be. Here are a few tips you can give your client to make their time in your studio exceptional:

  • Tip 1) Remind clients to clean their lashes before arriving.

Whether their lash appointment is mid day or first thing in the morning, their lashes should always be freshly washed. We here at Beautifeye always recommend client’s wash their lashes frequently with our Pink Lash Bath. Having the cleanest possible lashes prior to application will ensure that clients have the longest possible wear out of their lash extensions. Makeup, oil, sweat, dust, and bacteria all create a barrier between the lash and the extension which will surely result in adhesive breakdown and premature natural lash shedding. Washing lashes before an appointment also allows more lashing time during the appointments itself; it’s a win win!

  • Tip 2) Catch up with your client on their day to day.

Catching up with clients is one of my favorite things to do. Especially when I only get to see some of them once a month. These little chats are great to help a client pass time but it’s important to remember they need to stay “little”. Facial expressions and mouth movement can interrupt the lash application. So, to achieve the best application, try to find a good balance between engaging the client and focusing on the process.

  • Tip 3) Encourage napping.

    Who needs a reason to nap? There’s plenty of benefits one can gain from a good nap; especially a lash nap. Your appointment time will fly by, the minimal movement will help you stay in the “lash” zone, and your client will get a free nap! To help encourage sleep, try and make your studio into a comforting and judgment free space. If a client feels they won't be judged for things like snoring it’ll allow them to fall asleep much easier. Let them know that what goes on during your lash session stays within the door’s of your studio (;

Therefore, take the time to ensure your visit will be the best.

MYTH #3 – YOU CAN’T WASH YOUR LASHES

False: It is important that you clean, nourish, and protect your lashes daily.

Some clients believe keeping eyelash extensions away from water will prolong their hold and keep them in good shape. This statement is false. A lack of daily cleansing and maintenance will cause the adhesive to weaken as well as your natural lashes. This in turn causes premature lash shedding making any lash vestment practically useless. Therefore, it’s essential to have client’s cleanse their lashes twice daily not just to control fall out but to avoid eye infections, irritation, and growth of lash build-up.

That being said, don’t let any lash myths or misconceptions hold you back from starting your lash extension journey! you can totally do this!

No myths here…just a little eye magic

So, from what we’ve concluded, all of these myths have proven to be false. To gain a better perspective on where these myths may come from I spoke to Dr. Glee-Ann; an eye doctor from Monocle Premier Eye Care. I wanted to know what kind of things she had heard from patients regarding these myths. I was also curious to see if she had any advice for people who wanted to give lash extensions a try but held back due to their worries. Dr. Glee-Ann had this to say:

introducing Dr. Glee- Ann Llemit from Monoclewestu:

I think the biggest takeaway is to let the professionals do the eyelash extensions. ”

here’s what Dr. Glee-Ann had to say about these myths…

“I think the biggest takeaway is to let the professionals do the eyelash extensions. I have seen many cases of conjunctivitis (red eyes) from improper self application of lashes - usually it's a chemical reaction with solution getting in their eyes. Also, I talk to patients about not rubbing their lashes because that can cause them to fall out or even worse get stuck in their eyes. It's best not to wait until the last minute for lash refills.

I loved the part about educating [clients] to clean their lashes - it is so vital to keep them clean! We wash our hair and scalp to get rid of dandruff and build up but somehow we were never taught to clean our eyelashes (which can also have flaking). Blepharitis (flaking from lashes that cause lid inflammation) is so common and can easily be treated by proper lid hygiene (I highly recommend Beautifeye's Pink Lash Bath).

As summer is quickly approaching, I highly recommend investing in sunglasses to protect your eyes from the UV Rays. At Monocle, we carry an assortment of sunglasses including Chanel, Maui Jim, Dior, Coach, Polo Ralph Lauren, Oliver Peoples, etc.

Myths and misconceptions will always plague any successful industry. It’s important to remember though that these worries come from past experiences. If you treat your clients right and perform your work with care, not a myth in the world will be strong enough to keep them away.

Until next month - Cecily
